Breed Origins

Despite their reputation as France’s national dog, Poodles actually originated in Germany, where they were bred as water retrievers — the word “Pudel” comes from the German “pudeln,” meaning “to splash in water.”

Over time, the breed was refined in France for performance and companionship.

The smaller Miniature and Toy varieties were later developed for city living and companionship, while maintaining the intelligence and athleticism of their larger ancestor.

Appearance & Physical Traits

Poodles are instantly recognisable for their dense, curly, hypoallergenic coats and proud, athletic stance.

  • Size Options: Toy, Miniature, Standard
  • Body Type: Balanced, square build with elegant movement
  • Coat: Single coat of tight curls in many colours — white, black, apricot, red, silver, cream, chocolate, blue, or parti-colours
  • Expression: Alert, bright, and full of confidence

Temperament & Personality

Poodles are lively, social, and exceptionally intelligent. They love being part of family life and thrive when they’re mentally engaged.

They form deep bonds with their owners and are known for their playful sense of humour. With the right guidance, they’re polite, adaptable, and affectionate companions for families, singles, and seniors alike.

Training & Socialisation

Poodles rank among the most trainable breeds in the world — second only to Border Collies in working intelligence.

Training Tips:

  • Use positive reinforcement and keep sessions fun.
  • Provide consistent structure and early socialisation.
  • Engage their minds with advanced tricks, agility, or obedience work.

A bored Poodle will quickly invent its own entertainment, which may include mischief!

Exercise & Activity Needs

All Poodles need daily exercise to stay happy and balanced.

  • Toy & Miniature: 45–60 minutes of play and walks daily.
  • Standard: 60–90 minutes of vigorous activity — running, swimming, or agility.

They excel at dog sports, swimming, and retrieving — reflecting their original working roots.

Grooming & Maintenance

The Poodle’s coat is beautiful but high-maintenance.

  • Brushing: Every 1–2 days to prevent matting.
  • Professional Grooming: Every 6–8 weeks for clipping and styling.
  • Bathing: Every 3–4 weeks with gentle shampoo.
  • Other Care: Clean ears regularly, brush teeth, and trim nails monthly.

Although low-shedding, they’re not “no-maintenance” dogs — their coat needs consistent care.

Health & Lifespan

Poodles are generally healthy and long-lived, though some hereditary issues occur.

Common concerns include:

  • Hip dysplasia (Standard)
  • Progressive retinal atrophy (PRA)
  • Addison’s disease
  • Epilepsy
  • Dental issues (Toy & Miniature)

Regular vet checks and genetic health testing from responsible breeders help ensure a long, happy life.

Diet & Nutrition

Feed your Poodle a balanced, high-quality diet suited to their size and activity level.

  • Adults: Two meals daily
  • Puppies: Three to four smaller meals
  • Diet Tips: Look for protein-rich formulas with healthy fats for coat health.

Avoid overfeeding Toy and Miniature varieties, as they can gain weight quickly.

Yes — affectionate and gentle, especially when raised with children.

Are Poodles hypoallergenic?
They’re one of the most allergy-friendly breeds, though no dog is entirely allergen-free.
