Why Puppy Training Matters
Puppy training is more than just teaching “sit.”
It’s about setting your dog up for a lifetime of good behaviour, building a strong bond, and keeping everyone in the house happy.
Benefits of Training Your Puppy:
✅
Cleaner carpets – Goodbye random puddles!
✅
A pup that actually listens (well… mostly)
✅
Fewer chewed shoes, couches, and remote controls
✅
A stronger bond between you and your furry mate
Max’s Tip:
"Train early. Trust me, trying to teach an 8-year-old bulldog not to steal sausages is a losing battle."
The Big Puppy Problems.
And How to Fix Them.
| Problem | Solution | Max's Wisdom |
|---|---|---|
| Toilet Training | Stick to a routine, praise outdoor wees, and clean accidents thoroughly. | "And for the love of bones, don't rub their nose in it. That's just rude." |
| Chewing Everything | Give plenty of chew toys and keep valuables out of reach. | "Shoes taste amazing. Don"t blame the pup " hide your shoes!" |
| Jumping Up | Teach "sit" for greetings and reward calm behaviour. | "Humans squeal when we jump. That"s basically applause " we think you love it!" |
| Biting & Nipping | Redirect with toys and stop play if bites get too rough. | "Those tiny teeth are like razors. Don't be a chew toy, mate!" |
| Not Listening | Use short sessions, clear commands, and tasty rewards. | "If the treats are rubbish, we're not listening. Simple as that." |
Max’s Golden Rules for Training
- Keep sessions short (5–10 minutes). Puppies have the attention span of a goldfish on caffeine.
- Be consistent – same words, same actions, every time.
- Reward good behaviour with treats, praise, or belly rubs.
- Never punish – it only makes pups sneaky, not smart.
- Be patient. You’re raising a baby dog, not a robot.
Grumpy Old Max says:
"You think it’s tough now? Wait until they hit the teenage phase. You’ll miss the days of toilet accidents – trust me."
Step-by-Step Puppy Training Guide
1️⃣ Potty Training Basics
- Take your pup out frequently (after eating, sleeping, and playtime).
- Reward immediately after they go outside.
- Supervise indoors or use crate training to prevent accidents.
2️⃣ Essential Commands
Teach simple commands first:
🐾 Sit – Great for greetings.
🐾 Stay – Stops chaos before it starts.
🐾 Come – Crucial for safety.
🐾 Leave It – Saves your socks, your sanity, and your sandwiches.
3️⃣ Socialisation
Expose your puppy to new people, dogs, and environments. Good socialisation prevents fear and aggression later.
Max warns:
"Socialise your pup early. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a dog that thinks the postman is the devil."
4️⃣ Play & Enrichment
A tired puppy is a good puppy!
Use puzzle feeders, toys, and fun training games to burn energy while teaching manners.
When to Get Help
Sometimes puppies need extra guidance – and that’s OK. If your pup’s behaviour feels overwhelming, or you just want a pro’s touch, reach out to a qualified dog trainer or behaviourist.
Max’s Truth Bomb:
"If you’re crying over chewed-up curtains every day, it’s time to call a pro. No shame in that, mate."

Puppy Training FAQs (With Max’s Sass)
Q: How long does it take to toilet train a puppy?
A: Usually a few weeks to months with consistency.
Max: "Some of us take longer. We’re just testing your patience, that’s all."
Q: My puppy bites a lot. Is that normal?
A: Yes – teething and play-biting are normal, but you can redirect and teach bite inhibition.
Max: "It’s normal. Those teeth are free acupuncture. You’re welcome."
Q: What’s the best age to start training?
A: Start as soon as you bring your pup home – even 8-week-old puppies can learn basic commands.
Max: "Earlier the better. Trust me, bad habits age like fine wine – they get worse."
